DAY 8 AT EDWIN SHAW
The big news for today is that Mike got a smaller trache. They took out the size 8 and put in the size 6. There is still a gap from where the bigger hole was, but the skin will contract and heal to the new hole size.
Also, they capped the trache for Mike today. He can now whisper and is getting better at breathing through his nose and mouth rather than the hole. We have heard that if Mike tolerates the cap well for 24-48 hours, he could have the trache pulled out.
Mike's nurse told my parents that Mike did really good today. She said Mike was pushing his wheelchair out from therapy when she came down to get him, feeding tube stand in hand. He told her, "I don't think you're mean." In fact, he agrees that all the staff at Edwin Shaw are nice.
He told me though, in a mumbled whisper, "...Sucks, I hate it..." regarding the whole rehab thing in general. He hates his trache. He hates being sore. He even told us tonight that, "he would rather be sleeping where we are sleeping." He wants to go home.
Uncle Gary, Aunt Jennifer, and Elise came tonight and brought Mike a few things. First, Jennifer gave him a stuffed-animal spider to hang from his net bed. He liked that. Then they had this GIANT card for him, homemade.
The card was about 3'x2'. The envelope had his address on it, and a scanned picture of Mike's face was the stamp! Inside, there was a giant picture of a sports car on the front, a picture of (I guess) Fat Joe saying "Wassup!", and on the back, a picture of Danica Patrick looking all sexy. Gary works at a sign-printing company (MCA) and he gets all these really cool poster scraps. He is very creative. One year he went as a cereal killer for Halloween...he strung a box of cereal around his neck with a knife through it hahaha. I will take pictures of the card and post them in the photo album.
Mike liked the card. He smiled a lot. He even thanked them before they left for coming and said, "see ya' ". They could tell what he said.
In other news, I went shopping today for my Halloween costume. I am going as Anna Valerious, a.k.a. Van Helsing's vampire-slaying woman in the movie by the same name.
Anna Valerious Pic
I was very excited as I located most of the pieces of my costume today. Now I just have a few more things to get, and a stop at Pat Catan's, and a trip to Grandma's for quick sewing (I promise it will be simple Grandma!), and I will be all set.
