DAY 12 AT EDWIN SHAW
Mike did really good today at OT. She worked his right arm extensively. He was lifting it much higher than previously.
He is very sore. He did hamstring stretches in PT, and it hurt him a lot later. Plus the knee.
I also need to correct some info reported yesterday. Mike's blood thinner actually gets injected. They give him shots every morning in the fatty tissue (there ain't much) on his abdomen. THAT is why he hates it so much. I mean, wouldn't you?
But in Speech, he got to practice drinking sips of water. He learned how to tuck his chin down to help make sure it goes down the right pipe. He really enjoyed that.
Mike enjoyed his afternoon visitors very much. He got to see his cousin Crystal for the first time since his injury. I think she was really impressed with the progress he's made.
By the time evening rolled around, Mike fell asleep around 6. By 7, Kurt and Brian had arrived. So I tried to wake him up. He got really agitated. He told us to go away. He was really grouchy, and he realized this, but didn't know why. He told us, "Guys, I'm just grouchy. It's been a bad day. Sorry."
We told him that's okay. It was funny in a way, because prior to his accident, Mike was a bear right after waking up anyways. But I definitely for the first time saw signs of the so-called "Agitated-Confused" stage of the recovery. It all goes back to that Rancho Scale where they rate the recovery of TBI patients. I think Mike is starting stage four maybe. While he was agitated, he was very confused and said words that made no sense. It was kind of like a drunk person talking, slurring non-sensical words.
Anyways, it will be hard, but it means he is getting better. He should feel better tomorrow, because he doesn't have any therapy. We told him we are bringing Louie in to see him tomorrow. He said he would like to see her.
I am off to watch a movie and eat pizza with Deonna & Denny. Talk to you tomorrow.
