DAY 13 AT EDWIN SHAW
Louie came to visit Mike today. He really enjoyed it a lot. He held and petted her. He was smiling. He used to get home from work and pick her up and press his head against hers. It was like a special thing he did with Louie. She would always be happy to see him when he got home and would usually be purring when he'd sit down by her. Well today he did the same thing. He'd just lean his cheek against her and smile, meanwhile she'd purr. It seemed to comfort him. I am going to post some pictures in the photo album if you would like to see.
Mike had a handful of visitors today. Grandma & Grandpa stopped by. Gary and Jenn came to see him. Jennifer brought him a ghost to hang on his net bed. Its mouth is a hole and it was meant to be a candy bag. She brought him five little balls to practice throwing into the ghost's mouth. Mike sinked 3 in a row! Not too bad with his right hand!
Mike's friend George's parents also stopped by. They brought him another light-up ball--a football shape. Mike now has plenty of light-up balls. Despite Roy stealing his first one (chuckle), he has managed to keep track of these.
Gary printed off the post by Kristy and brought it in today. We read it to Michael. He said he didn't remember Kristy or any of the nurses in the SICU. We told him he wouldn't because he was sleeping the entire time basically! But we told him what wonderful and amazingly kind people they are, and that he will have to meet them someday once he is healed. We told him he might not remember what Kristy looks like, but that there is a good chance that he might recognize her voice!! Kristy loved to chat to Mike. We told him how all the nurses, especially Heather & Jennifer, loved what beautiful eyes he had and complimented to us how good-looking Mike is. Then we told him that Bruce & Chris, and the rest of his male nurses, never said that, but that they liked him none-the-less. We also explained to him the other day that the bruises under his nails are from the way the SICU nurses had to pinch his fingers with a pen while he was asleep. He just shrugged like it was no big thing! But I remember how excited we would get when he'd move when they did that!
Gary told Mike how amazing he is. He told him about the day that he came in and Mike's respiratory therapist Doug was looking through Mustang pictures with him. Gary said, "Mike, I walked in and Doug was like, 'This here is a Boss 302...' and your eyes were as big as saucers and you had a huge grin on your face and I was like, 'Oh my God this is amazing!'. I went straight out and called your folks to get right up there. That was the first time you smiled. Now look at you! You're shooting hoops <into the ghost>! Doug would not believe it!"
We told him that those nurses took such good care of Mike the whole 45 days or so that he was in there. We also mentioned that he had this Dr. Muakkassa who was a very diligent and serious guy. But we told him that as he got better, the doctor would ease up a bit and smile! We said that by one of his last days in there, his doctor actually patted Little Panda as he was telling us about Mike's progress!! I don't know if we ever mentioned this to any of the nurses up there, but I am sure they will be amused by this anecdote when they read this. That moment epitomized a doctor/patient trust that you always hope to have. We realized that he really had felt a connection with Mike and his recovery.
I can't wait until we return to that SICU and say hello to all of the wonderful folks who worked so hard to save my brother's life. We will also stop by the PICU, because there are some special folks up there too. I want to see their faces when they see Mike again and hear his voice. We are forever indebted to each and every one of you.
