DAY 29 AT EDWIN SHAW
Mike will be coming home very soon, I just feel that. He is doing incredibly well. He still can't walk very good, and is very sore, but it will get better and I think he'll walk again unassisted someday. He was in good spirits tonight. He ate well. I brought him a Swenson's milkshake. He drank that along with three other little half pints of milk.
We are now in the process of scampering to get necessary supplies for home, such as bars for the toilet and seats for the shower. We will also be moving Mike's bedroom downstairs into our dining room, and the dining room table up into his room. It will make it much easier for Mike since we only have a first floor bathroom. Regardless, sounds like fun.
As the Keith Urban concert quickly approaches, I am a bit bummed I didn't just cough up the dough and grab some tickets. The problem with the Gund though is that the seats are so expensive for where you end up and just not worth the money.
However, I successfully talked Mom and Grandma into going to the Carousel Dinner Theater to see Footloose before it goes off the marquee. It is like pulling teeth getting Mom to do something fun, but understandably she is exhausted. She is home literally for like 15 minutes between work and going to Edwin Shaw, and when she gets home she's pooped out and goes straight to bed. However, we see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Funny story regarding the Carousel Dinner Theater. One morning I was driving to work, and as I passed their sign I noticed the "P" had fallen out of "NOW PLAYING" so that it read "NOW LAYING". I laughed at that to say the least. Then on closer inspection I about died. It said below that, "ANNIE" and below that, "NEXT MISS SAIGON". So think about that a bit and then you'll realize why I was so bummed when I returned with my digital camera to take a photo of it for the Tonight Show and someone had fixed it.
Hmm, Mike had Grandma & Grandpa and Aunt Sharon there tonight. Aunt Sharon stretched his legs a lot tonight. She is committed to coming over and working him on his off days of therapy once he's outpatient. He'll only have therapy two to three days a week with Edwin Shaw. And by the way, they got their new signs up, which are green instead of white and read "AKRON GENERAL MEDICAL CENTER" with very small "Edwin Shaw Rehab" underneath. So if you use that sign on Krumroy to find where to turn, beware. There is no longer the goofy looking tree on the sign.
Other than that, I have decided I want to volunteer. I have not done so in many years but feel compelled to do so. The Red Cross continues to be like a vampire and try to get my blood, however I realized after one donation it is not efficient for me to give blood and I could help people in so many other ways (um, I was sick for 3 hours after giving blood and couldn't go back to work...).
I know what I would like to do, I just can't figure out who is in charge of it. In high school we did water quality testing and macroinvertibrate studies in the area. Plus I did that Envirothon thing and enjoyed that. Well I checked the Summit County Soil and Water Conservation District website, but there was no volunteer information for things of that nature. I've given thought to volunteering for the Medina County Park District maybe. I am just not sure yet which non-profit organization would best suit my inner-tree-hugging-hippie that has been suppressed while surrounded by ultra-conservative engineers. Any thoughts? You all seem like very wonderfully giving people who already volunteer. I am open-minded, I've also given thought to volunteering at the Summit County Hospice where my Grandma Gamauf passed away. And I've always said, once I get established and have money to write-off, one organization I will always support is PBS. But for those you probably just sit and answer the telephone. However, performing an unnatural amount of physical exertion for money (i.e. Race for this or that) is not my thing either after the Roadrunner Marathon Relay. If you know an organization that needs volunteers, other than giving blood, let me know. I need something flexible. I get along with old people and kids alike!
